I thought I would write out some answers to frequently asked questions (and perhaps some that are not asked as well)...
Data
- Where possible I try to record at least the dates and places of birth, marriage, residence, and death.
- I do run date error checks on all of the dates, to find cases of a child born after a parent died, etc., and correct the errors where possible. I encourage you to do the same if your system allows it!
- What do all these color squares mean? Each place is color coded by county, state, or country. These are the same colors on the search pages, and the pedigree and descendent charts.
- While not necessarily an accepted standard by others, I prefer my places in reverse order: Country, State, County, City, Other... Thus when I produce lists sorted by place alphabetically, I get the list both alphabetically and geographically sorted at the same time.
- Want to print? Choose the "Report" option from the dropdown menu at the top of the page.
Sources
- Near the bottom of each page are listed the sources I have for each person. Email addresses in the sources are displayed as graphics to foil attempts of the addresses being gleaned by spammers.
- In many cases are also listed the text of will abstracts, deeds, census records, and other documents. Clicking a linked name in these will take you to that person's record, or if that person has not yet been identified, to a search for that name in other documents.
Notes
- The "Add Notes" option enables you to submit your own notes and annotations for each person, and these notes will then appear directly on the page for anyone browsing.
Why do I do this?
- I work as a website developer, and combining that with an interest in genealogy, I like to do what I can to produce a helpful and innovative website for sharing and understanding genealogy information.
- I owe a debt of gratitude to all those who are or are believed to be my ancestors (so far, about 21,000 and counting), because if anyone of them had not lived, I would not be here. Considering all of the people recorded here on this website, there are millions of descendents alive today. So I like to do what I can to give these people some attention.
- I believe that figuring out where we came from may help to shed light on where we are and where we are going. We are all a product of our ancestors' genes, and so it is helpful to know who they were.
- In some of the other genealogy websites I have browsed, the details for each person is often sparse, not having dates or places recorded. I like to be thorough, as this eliminates errors and leads to a fuller tree.
- Gotta do something in my spare time. :)
Corrections
As always, if you have information to add or correct, feel free to add a note to the website, or email me. I would be glad to add anything that you would like to contribute. Also, if you have any suggestions for improving the website, let me know!
