The Gurganus families of early eastern North Carolina and beyond are believed to be descended from Edward Gurgany of Jamestown, Virginia in the early 1600's, though it is not yet known how. He may have have descendents who migrated down to eastern North Carolina.

Click the upper map on the left for a full-size view of Hyde, Beaufort, Pitt, and Martin Counties where these Gurganus's and their descendents lived. While the proof of the connections between these Gurganus's is not yet established, my working theory (solely based on circumstances and guessing) is that they first migrated into Tyrrell County (perhaps what is now part of Washington County), then down to what was then Hyde County west of the Pungo River, and then up the Pamlico River further into Beaufort Co, Pitt County, and Martin County. Lines like my own Gurganus line stayed in Martin County. There are many deeds and wills that seem to pull together, but I am not sure exactly how.
David Gurganus of Pitt and Martin Counties in the late 1700's moved to Edgefield SC and then to Bibb Co GA, and was an ancestor of many of the Gurganus's in Alabama and places further west.
Another Gurganus line comes down from another Nicholas Gurganus in Hyde Co and migrates down to Onslow and other southeastern NC counties, Alabama and places further west. Click the lower map on the left for a full-size view of Onslow, Jones, Pender, New Hanover, Brunswick, and other counties.
The maps of North Carolina counties has a more overall view of which counties and states the Gurganus's were living in during the 1700's and 1800's.
